Things to Watch: Next 30 Days
Some potential events that we’re tracking closely which could have a market impact in the near future:
- Middle East war. With the conflict now expanding and little clarity around how it gets resolved, investor attention—to the extent it’s not focused on the conflict itself—will likely be on oil. Stepping forward to answer the question “what are the implications of rising oil prices?” and provide ideas for mitigating the impact will be an opportunity.
- (Re) Focus on inflation. Last week’s PPI print was higher than expected and energy and shipping costs are likely to increase, so any sign that inflation is going in the wrong direction could open a door for communications about inflation-proof solutions.
- Flipping the consumer script. Whereas poor employment results have recently been taken as a signal that the Fed could lower rates, that seems less likely now in light of inflationary pressure (see previous bullet). So, ADP (3/4) and BLS (3/6) reports below expectations could instead send investors in search of ideas for a slowing economy with persistent inflation and steady rates.
- Tariff decision implications. Middle East conflict has displaced anxiety about tariff uncertainty, but there is certainly no more clarity about how the decision will play out. Planning communications around scenarios for torn-up trade deals and/or tariff reimbursement decisions could therefore have value.
