Things to Watch: Next 30 Days
Some potential events that we’re tracking closely which could have a market impact in the near future:
- Middle East war. The cycle of threat->backtrack->uncertainty continues, even louder. But that’s why the Rapid Response process involves identifying scenarios first, then filtering them through screens of likelihood of market effects and implications for investment solutions. Moreover, the investor anxiety resulting from the uncertainty creates communication opportunities that are focused on anxiety mitigation rather than short-term tactics.
- The “Stag” in stagflation. In the next few weeks, data about consumer demand (Pepsico earnings, 4/23), attitudes (April Consumer Confidence Index, 4/28), and broad spending trends (Preliminary Q1 GDP, 4/30) will offer a picture of the state of the US economy. Signs of significant slowing could open the door for communications about “flight to safety” options.
- Private Credit storm clouds. In an industry that hates surprises, the wobbling of the opaque world of private credit creates anxiety. Asset managers and industry data providers can use this as an opportunity to deliver value in the form of ideas for less wobbly options and/or data-based reasons for calmed nerves, before and immediately after other shoes drop.
- Xi-Trump meeting. In a little over a month (May 14-15), Xi Jinping and President Trump will meet in Beijing, with discussions likely focused on trade. It seems safe to assume that there will be market-stirring “deal announcements” before and immediately after, opening the door to communications focused on, for example, the benefits of sector investing or active management.
